Own Business Day

Today, October 12 is Own Business Day. It is dedicated to all the hard-working people who

had the courage to take their destiny in their own hands, not to rely on a monthly salary and do what their passion led them to. Since you are reading this post you are probably one of them.

Owning a business is not for the fainthearted . There is no guaranteed paycheque, you may be responsible to (many) other people's livelihoods, volatile market conditions keep you up at night. These are all given.

There is one thing that isn't though - loneliness. Many business owners feel they are in it by themselves and have no one to share the burden with. There is only so much they can share with their employees (if they have any), the family is usually uninformed or too involved, and friends are for beer, not business advice.

It doesn't have to be this way. Hereunder are a few ideas about how to be less lonely:

  • network: although networking is usually mentioned as a sales and marketing tool, it is also an opportunity to meet like-minded people, as well as people with more/complementary experience, and can be a great way to learn new things, consult, and get advice

  • be a mentor: they say that the bets way to learn is to teach. When you mentor someone else you get the benefit of being exposed to other people's problems that may be very similar to yours, with the benefit of them being, well, other people's... It gives you the opportunity to analyse and refer to these issues objectively and learn something on the way.

  • get a mentor: a mentor is anyone with ample experience and knowledge that shares them with you. You don't have to find all the answers yourself, and if you can't afford hiring a mentor there are plenty of charities that offer free mentoring

The important thing is - you don't have to do this alone.

Happy Own Business Day
